As their friendship deepens, Oskar is emboldened to make a stand against the bullies but after Eli attacks another local, Virginia (Ika Nord), she is forced to admit to Oskar that she’s a vampire. When Håkan fails to bring home the blood she needs, Eli is forced to attack a local man Jocke (Mikael Rahm) and later is left to fend for herself when Håkan is interrupted trying to exsanguinate a student and disfigures himself with acid. Although Eli is at first reluctant, the two grow close but Eli has many secrets, not least of which is that she’s a centuries old vampire and Håkan is her human familiar.

Then one night he meets Eli (Lina Leandersson), a young girl who has moved into the apartment with an older man Håkan (Per Ragnar). Oskar spends much of his time plotting revenge against his tormentors and obsessing over newspaper clippings about murders and violent crimes. He’s bullied by his classmates, particularly a gang led by Conny (Patrik Rydmark), his mother has little time for him and his estranged father is more interested in his new lover than his son. Taking its title from an arcane bit of vampire lore that often gets ignored as it might get in the way of the story, that vampires need to be invited into the homes of potential victims, Tomas Alfredson’s extraordinary film, based on a 2004 novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist, is as much a very strange love story as it is a horror film and is one of the finest of all post-Millennial vampire films.ġ2-year-old Oskar (Kåre Hedebrant) lives with his distant and cold mother Yvonne in an anonymous Stockholm suburb in the early 1980s.
